PRODUCT CARE & SUSTAINABILITY

Leather is a timeless and durable natural material that, with proper care, only becomes more beautiful over the years. By taking care of your leather bag and other leather products properly, you can extend their lifespan and preserve their natural beauty. Here we share our best advice for care, sustainable use and long-term care of your leather products from RUMI OF SWEDEN .

The natural properties of leather

Our products are made from carefully selected premium leather from LWG-certified tanneries (Leather Working Group), ensuring responsible and sustainable production. The leather is a by-product of the meat industry , which means we are reusing an existing material instead of letting it go to waste.

As leather is a natural material , each product has its own unique variations in color, texture and grain. These characteristics should not be considered defects but rather part of the authentic and vibrant character of the leather.

We use semi-vegetable tanned leather , a method that combines traditional plant extracts with modern techniques to create a durable and more environmentally friendly material that ages beautifully over time.

How leather changes over time

Over time, leather develops a natural patina , which means it gains a deeper color tone and a unique luster through use. This is a normal process that gives the product character and a personal expression.

Factors that affect leather patination:

  • Daylight & UV radiation – can darken or change the color shade.
  • Skin contact & natural oils – contribute to a softer feel and shine.
  • Moisture & wetness – can cause stains or deteriorate the leather's structure if not treated properly.
  • Scratches & scuffs – create a living surface, but can be minimized through regular care.

Understanding and embracing this change allows you to appreciate your leather product even more – every scratch and shade change is part of its history.

How to take care of your leather bag

  • Cleaning
    • Regular cleaning helps keep the leather fresh and free from dirt and dust.
    • Wipe your bag with a soft, dry cloth after use.
    • If it gets dirty, use a damp cloth with lukewarm water and a mild soap solution (without alcohol or harsh chemicals).
    • Avoid using too much water , as leather is sensitive to moisture and can become stiff if it gets too wet.
    • Let the bag air dry at room temperature – do not place it near radiators, direct sunlight or other heat sources.
  • Moisturizing & care
To prevent drying out and cracking, leather should be moisturized regularly.
    • Use a high-quality leather care cream or leather conditioner .
    • Apply a thin layer with a soft cotton cloth and work it in with circular movements.
    • Allow the product to absorb and dry naturally before using the bag again.
  • Protection & storage
To maintain the quality of the leather, the bag should be stored properly when not in use.
    • Store it in a dust bag or a soft cloth bag to protect it from dust and light.
    • Avoid stacking heavy objects on top of the bag, as this can deform its shape.
    • Fill the bag with tissue paper or soft material to maintain its original shape.
    • Place it in a dry place – avoid humid environments which can affect the leather's structure and create mold.
  • Protection against weather & stains
Leather is naturally sensitive to water and oily substances, but you can minimize the risk of stains through preventive measures.
    • Apply a Impregnation spray for leather that protects against moisture and dirt.
    • Avoid contact with perfume, makeup, disinfectants or other chemicals that may leave stains.
    • If the bag gets wet, dry it gently with a soft cloth and let it air dry.

Care of other leather products

The same care instructions apply to other leather products such as wallets, toiletry bags and smaller accessories. However, some products, especially those in direct contact with hands and pockets, may need to be cleaned more frequently due to grease and dirt.

For smaller leather products:

  • Clean regularly with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
  • Moisturize with leather conditioner to avoid drying out.
  • Store in a dry place and avoid leaving them in direct sunlight for extended periods.

Sustainability & Leather – a conscious choice

Leather is a durable material when cared for properly and can last for many years, making it a responsible choice compared to synthetic alternatives. By investing in high-quality leather products and caring for them carefully, you reduce the need to replace them frequently, which in turn reduces waste and consumption.

To further reduce our impact on the environment, we only work with LWG certified tanneries , where resources such as water and chemicals are used responsibly. We also use semi-vegetable tanning methods to reduce the amount of harmful substances in production.

Choosing a leather product from RUMI OF SWEDEN means choosing a product with craftsmanship, quality and longevity – and with the right care, it will accompany you for many years to come.
